Several years ago I started a slow project of selling and donating old things whenever I had the urge to shop. It's changed my relationship to stuff in a way that feels enduring, the house is less cluttered, and our budget is in better shape as I buy fewer, better things.

I have been decluttering all summer, and can attest this can offer some good dopamine hits. It is better when you can see a dent in your efforts, but still.

Lately when I feel the urge to buy something I try and do a quick declutter instead, even if it’s only 1-2 items. It delivers the same dopamine hit as a package delivery and the bonus is some mental clarity and a little physical space back. Do try it.
